Equity, Education, and Incarceration: What is California's future?
The UC Davis School of Education’s CRESS Center hosted the 3rd Annual Capital Region Equity Summit on March 24, 2012, drawing up to 200 participants and reflecting a diverse set of stakeholders, including superintendents, policymakers, teachers, community-based educators, faculty, juvenile justice experts, among others. This year’s theme is: Equity, Incarceration, and Education: What is California’s Future?

Mini Grants Available for 2012 Conference Attendees
We are thrilled to announce a new initiative of the California Equity Summit supported by The California Wellness Foundation, MINI-GRANTS for MAXIMUM CHANGE: Locally Grown Equity. All Equity Summit participants have the opportunity to apply for a mini-grant (up to $500 each) to carry-out local equity-based initiatives in their schools/neighborhoods/detention facilities that relate to our conference theme. A select group of grantees will be featured as a “best practice” at California’s Equity Summit 2013. For more information, contact Vajra Watson at vmwatson@ucdavis.edu.
Equity Summit Panel – Part 1
The panel was moderated by Dr. Ramona Bishop, Superintendent of Vallejo City Unified School District. Dr. Bishop is a visionary, data-driven educator, and genuine comrade in our struggle to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. Not only does she care deeply about the expertise each of you brings to the table, but she is a skilled, poignant facilitator and can help weave points together in a timely matter.
Goal(s) of the Panel: To explore, examine, and expose tools that break the cycle of incarceration. Panelists discussed lessons learned and recommendations at the personal, practical, and political levels that can inform an equity-based policy agenda for California. Topics discussed included: continuum of correctional realignment, ineffective gang in-junctures, best practices in probation, and more.
